DREAM MEANING - Dreams are fascinating phenomena and have been the subject of research and interpretation throughout human history. From ancient times to the present day, dreams have influenced cultures, beliefs, and perspectives on the subconscious mind as well as the spiritual world.
During ancient civilizations, dreams were often considered windows into the supernatural world. In dreams, gods, evil spirits, or other supernatural entities were believed to communicate with humans. Pleasant dreams were considered a sign of the presence of gods or God, while nightmares were interpreted as an omen of the presence of evil spirits or demons. Beliefs like this are reflected in the mythology and religious practices of many ancient cultures around the world.
However, views on dreams began to shift along with the development of philosophical and scientific thought. One of the figures who made a major contribution to the understanding of dreams was Aristotle. According to Aristotle, dreams are the result of mental activity when a person sleeps. He stated that even though a person is sleeping, the senses are still capable of capturing external stimuli. These stimuli are then interpreted by the brain in the form of dreams.
After Aristotle, thinking about dreams continued to evolve. One quite popular view came from Macrobius and Artemidorus. They classified dreams into two main categories: dreams related to the past and the present, and dreams related to the future.
Dreams related to the past and the present are often connected to daily events or a person's physical condition during sleep. For example, if someone feels the urge to urinate while sleeping, they might dream about a flood, which eventually triggers them to wet the bed.
On the other hand, dreams related to the future are considered to carry messages or prophecies about events that will happen. Macrobius and Artemidorus divided this category into three types: Oraculum, Visio, and Somnium. Oraculum refers to prophetic dreams or dreams considered to carry direct messages from God. Visio is a dream that predicts future events concretely. Meanwhile, Somnium is a symbolic dream that requires careful interpretation to reveal its meaning.
Although the understanding of dreams has developed over time, the belief in the meaning and power of dreams still persists in various cultures and spiritual beliefs. Even in the modern era, when science has provided explanations for the physiological and neurological processes behind dreams, many people still view dreams as something that holds deep meaning and can provide insight into themselves and the world around them.
In modern psychology, the study of dreams has become an integral part of understanding the human subconscious and mental processes. Theories such as Freud's theory of dream interpretation and Jung's theory of dream symbolism continue to be subjects of research and debate among experts.
Along with technological advancements, the study of dreams has also been pushed further with the development of brain imaging techniques and monitoring brain activity during sleep. Although much is still not fully understood about the subconscious mind and dreams, research continues to be conducted to uncover the secrets and potential of dreams in understanding the human mind and other mental phenomena.
Islamic psychology expert Muhammad Utsman Najati states that dreams are not merely subconscious impulses, but more than that, dreams carry meanings that are interpretations of the experiences gained by the soul while a person is asleep. During sleep, the soul detaches from the body, travels to various places, and returns upon awakening. The traveling soul exists in the realm of spirits where the laws of space and time and all their dimensions do not apply, and is temporarily freed from bodily impurities and worldly desires, which also helps the intellect to solve problems that trouble it in the waking state.
Experts in Islamic psychology agree that the realm of spirits provides unlimited facilities for the traveling soul to interact with the spirits it encounters. A concrete form of this assumption is that not a few people dream of meeting acquaintances who have passed away. This condition is what the Qur'an describes as death. This is as explained in Surah az-Zumar, which means: "Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought." (QS. az-Zumar: 42).
In understanding this verse, commentators agree that the essence of sleep is death, because when asleep, the human soul separates from, leaving the body, and is withheld by Allah just like a dead person. The difference lies in the point of its retention. In death, the soul is retained forever and never returned to the body, whereas in the condition of sleep, the soul is only retained temporarily and is returned by Allah at the time of awakening.
From the explanation above, it is clear that dreams are not limited to psychological factors alone, but rather serve as a means to read messages from the spirit world or messages from God, the form of which can be symbols we encounter in our dreams. In its development, interpretations, dream analysis, or dream meanings readjust to the conditions, habits, culture, and background of the society that believes in a certain meaning or symbolism of a particular dream. These dream meanings or interpretations were inherited from ancestors and passed down for centuries from generation to generation.
Although views on dreams have undergone changes from time to time, human interest and desire to understand the meaning and power of dreams remain undiminished. Dreams remain an important part of the human experience, inspiring, entertaining, and sometimes also challenging us to understand ourselves and the world around us more deeply.
Solution - Overcoming the effects of a bad dream interpretation
If you dream of something that could have bad consequences for you and your family
(such as dreaming of losing a tooth, etc.), you are expected to do the following
things to overcome it:
Take a broom stick (you can also use a toothpick, small bamboo, etc.). Then cut
or break it with your hands into 7 (seven) small pieces,
approximately 3 centimeters each. Provide a piece of paper or tissue. Prepare
table salt, just a little bit. Place the seven broken pieces of broom stick and the table
salt into the tissue or paper. Fold the paper and bury it
into the ground (your yard, your house's front yard). The sentence you must
say when you are about to bury/embed the paper (which contains the 7 pieces of broom
stick and salt) is a sentence asking the Almighty
to keep you away from the bad consequences of your dream.
Example sentence:
"Oh God.. Keep me and my family away from
disaster. This salt that I bury will not grow or sprout. Just
like my dream, which could have bad consequences for us, it will not come
true or will not happen. Amen.."
